Trees so unique they receive special care, dense forests, an always watchful untamed sea and huge cliffs that recount the creation of our planet. It feels like the beginning of a fantasy novel, but this is only part of the rich natural heritage of Euskadi.
Surrounded by the omnipresent Cantabrian Sea and encircled by mountains and forests, Euskadi is a blue and green jewel for nature lovers. Whether sailing across the water, wandering aimlessly through meadows, enjoying the beaches or climbing a mountain, the experience is always rewarding. The skies, ever-changing with the variable climate and the interaction of the sea and the mountains, are a show in themselves. There are plenty of special things to discover.
For example, the Flysch Route, a trip among sedimentary formations on the coast, between the Guipuzcoan towns of Deba and Zumaia, where you can clearly see all the sections of the Palaeocene. A fossil gem of singular beauty in a world that delights both scientists and tourists. Or Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where the vegetation is spattered with farms and each village is prettier than the last.
More than 52% of the territory is covered in forest. Nature lovers will appreciate the unique declaration that exists in Euskadi, offering special protection to particular trees: the Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur) in Ondategi (Zigoitia, Álava), for its size and beauty; the enormous Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) in Hernani (Gipuzkoa) in Eguzki Park; and the Yew (Taxus baccata) under which the Knights of Hijosdalgo used to meet on a regular basis in the valley of Valdegovía near the Monastery of Angosto (Valdegovía, Álava).
Boat trips, horseback riding, kayaking, trekking or cycling route are just some of the best ways of discovering this natural treasure. For the not so energetic, a car and a map will suffice. Sometimes, the hilly terrain can turn a trip into quite an adventure and you will feel as though you have walked into a fantasy novel. The exuberance of the environment makes the trip into an unforgettable memory. There is nothing like it for relieving stress. You’ll want to come back for more.
